In-depth supervision & case consultation for individuals:

I offer individual reflective supervision and case consultation to a wide range of children's professionals who feel they would benefit from a supervision style focussing on relational work within risk laden situations. In other words, I provide help thinking through the 'shades of grey' where much effective support for vulnerable families takes place.

I find many practitioners are striving to find a balance between offering real, helpful, reflexive support in families' lives but want to access additional thinkng space when situations become heavy with risk, or when progress feels 'stuck'. I can offer this either on an ongoing supervisory basis additional to the 'case/line management' style supervision many receive in their workplaces. Or via 'case consultation' around a particular issue for a fixed period of time, or until a difficulty is resolved.

       What I offer:

My supervision style blends a relational, therapeutic approach to support for families with a very clear focus on risk and change. It is often helpful for those with responsibilities for safeguarding but who work in organisations outside Social Care, for example designated safeguarding leads for charities, schools or youth organisations. Additionally I find many therapeutically trained practitioners/clinicians request support in thinking through child protection elements of situations or seek advice on responding to complex risk within the context of therapeutic relationships.

  • Consistent, reliable thinking space & supervision: Ongong support for anyone working with children or their parents, whatever their professional background or experience level.

  • Complex case consultation: For anyone wishing to be supported via specialist supervision for a period of time to assist in exploring, understanding and progressing cases which perhaps feel "stuck", or where there are differing views as to whether thresholds for social care intervention have been reached.

  • Individualised support/training in specific practice areas: For practitioners wishing to improve knowledge in a certain area e.g. those outside Social Care wishing to better understand social work processes and timescales. Or staff preparing to give evidence in court seeking practice or guidance.

  • Mentoring for designated safeguarding leads: Blending all three above elements to provide in-depth support tailored around the specifics of this challenging role.

  • Reflective, analtyical supervision for qualified social workers: For social workers employed outside traditional settings or in roles as the only social work qualified member of staff within their organisation. Additionally social workers employed within Social Services approach me for supplementary supervision to afford them extra space to explore their development and learning at a slower pace than is sometimes possible within their work settings.

My priority is in ensuring you find in-depth advice, consultation or thinking space that matches your individual needs. So if there is an area not listed above with which you require support, please do get in touch and we can discuss ways I may be able to help.

       How it works:

Because my philosphy is to base support around your specific needs, I don't have a set structure or pricing. Any of the above, or any other support required, can be adapted to fit your situation.

Safeguarding support is not something that makes anyone a fortune. I'm more interested in having a straightforward conversation about how I can help and agreeing a sensible package of support with pricing based on what seems fair. I can offer support either in person at your workplace or other neutral venue, or via Skype and other online platforms. Some individuals book specific weekly or fortnightly timeslots. Others look for more intensive support over shorter periods. Or pay a one off fee for anytime access to support through a defined period of time. Support is available at any time, including evenings and weekends, because challenges don't always fit into 9-5. Essentially I believe in sensible support that fills the gap you need it to.

What others say:

'Mike's supervision is holistic in style, encouraging me to think about the whole of the young person, not just the presenting "problem". His interest is in who the child or parent is as a human being, their strengths and their frameworks for thinking about their world. His committment to reflective, and relational social work is unwavering and infectious.'

'Mike has been an invaluable support to me in my role as Designated Safeguarding Officer. I have used Mike as someone with an external viewpoint and considerable experience to think through complex safeguarding issues with as they arise. He has role modelled techniques for talking with young people and staff/volunteers about difficult subjects. And helped us provide more in-depth insight to Social Services when referrals when needed.'
